Globally, English Literature has been
one of the most popular subjects for higher education. This branch of learning
has developed over the course of more than a thousand years and incorporates
socio-cultural influences of multiple civilizations. With changing times, the
subject has undergone a transformation from being a study of the work of famous
poets, essayists, novelists and dramatists to a psychoanalytical assessment of
contribution of English Literature on social, cultural and economic changes over
the years.
The Department of English at Annada
College aims at offering an all-inclusive learning of these new aspects of
English Literature along with an in-depth assessment of famous literary figures
and their works. Our faculty is dedicated towards helping students discover the
ingenuity of the language and literature. We offer a holistic learning
experience for students to help them appreciate the aesthetics of the English
literature.
Our Department offers admission to
undergraduate course in English literature. The wide-ranging syllabus of
English Literature includes Indo-Anglian Literature, Modern European Drama,
Post-colonial Literature in India, South Africa and America, History of
Feminism and Feminist Literature, Aspects of Feminist Literature, Neo-classical
Prose, Gothic Novels, Contemporary Writings in English, translations of the
Indian classics and such other interesting genres. The course has been designed
to include critically acclaimed works as well as popular literature. In every
semester, an assortment of units is selected to evenly distribute learning
across the above-mentioned areas of English Literature. Our faculty encourages
students to read from texts as well as assists them with simplified analysis
and interpretations for superior understanding.
If a student wants to pursue
undergraduate course in English Literature, he/she can apply after Class XII or
equivalent exam from a recognized board. English Literature offers
multi-dimensional career options for graduating students. Some choose to appear
for Civil Services and other public services after graduating from English. A
full-fledged academic career in the language is also in high demand across
India. Most of the government / non-government agencies look out for
translators, subject-matter experts, academicians and such other profiles on a
regular basis. Students with a background in English can go ahead to pursue
Mass Communication, Business Administration, Social Services, Government
Services, or opt to specialize in English with Linguistics, Creative Writing,
Comparative Literature and more.
In recent times, digitization is
playing an important role in boosting career prospects for students of English
Literature. This has brought English language into the mainstream corporate
scenario. Print, Online as well as Television seek for people who hold good
command over written as well as oral communication in English. Students can
explore a whole new world of digital content writing, online journalism,
blogging and more based on their personal choices.
