ZOOLOGY
Planet earth is blessed with a diversified group of
animals as an outcome of evolution through geological ages since the days life
began on this. Zoology is in fact a scientific branch of Biology that is
concerned with the study of the animal kingdom bearing immense diversification
at every level of body organization beginning from unicellular Protozoan to
multi-cellular mammals. Moreover, its study also includes the interaction of
animal kingdoms in their ecosystems such as classification, habits, structure,
embryology, distribution, evolution, and extinct species. Zoology has achieved
a great dimension with the emergence of many sub-branches like cytology,
genetics, developmental biology, Immunology, medical zoology,
Animal Behaviour, Biostatistics, Molecular Biology & animal
biotechnology, and very recently Bioinformatics. Thus, its study stands next to
medical science, attracting a huge mass of biology students pursuing the
subject as a attracts a huge mass of biology students towards pursuing
this subject as a career.
Our department offers undergraduate General and
Honours courses in Zoology. The curriculum covers various aspects of
Zoology namely the study of invertebrates and vertebrates, Genetics,
Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Pest Management, and Immunology. It has been
designed so that students of our department find themselves able to pursue
either Postgraduate or vocational courses in Zoology-related subjects. Our
faculty encourages students to study relevant textbooks and do laboratory works
properly. The department offers requisite assistance and a suitable atmosphere
to equip students with sound knowledge of the subject and the latest
research.
The students seeking admission to undergraduate courses in Zoology
need to pass class XII or equivalent examination from a recognized board.
The study of Zoology provides various career options to students in the fields
of genetics, biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, and
cytology. They can choose either the career of academicians or join the
industry after becoming graduates.
Zoology is an
ever-growing study. During the post-Covid days, the research in this
field has acquired a special dimension. The teaching faculty of The Department
of Zoology always try to provide state-of-the-art education and training to
students, so that they may find new avenues for further progress.
Laboratory Facilities
The department boasts
state-of-the-art laboratories designed to support both theoretical learning and
hands-on research:
- General Zoology Lab: Equipped for specimen dissection, microscopy,
and basic animal physiology studies.
- Molecular Biology Lab: For DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis,
and genetic studies.
- Aquatic Biology Lab: Aquariums with water quality control for the
study of aquatic organisms.
